Starved Rock State Park - St. Louis Canyon

I left home at 3:30 a.m. today to photograph the waterfall in St. Louis Canyon located in Starved Rock State Park. Unfortunately the water flow was tepid, though not a trickle, and wildflowers in bloom delayed. Nonetheless I had the canyon to myself for an hour and came away with a few shots.

Starved Rock is 140 miles from Kenosha, a few minutes south of Interstate 80 (exit 81). From the parking area it's a 15-20 minute hike to the falls.

Recording God's natural glory is a privilege that I share with you. I am only interpreting that which He gave us.

Often people will approach me when I am shooting and say things like, "You must have a really good camera." (That usually happens when I have a big lens attached to the camera!) I politely try to thank them for the comment while thinking, "Do you tell a chef that he must have a really good stove?"

The truth is that cameras and lenses are tools that are used to create art. I expanded my shelf of tools to include the Fujifilm X mirrorless camera system. Mirrorless cameras are lighter and easier for an old guy to carry into the field and, in the case of the Fujifilm X system, have image quality that rivals and sometimes exceeds DSLR systems.

Thank you for visiting and thanks to my family for putting up with a photographer's lifestyle -- taking off to find the best scenes and light, getting up before dawn and being out after sunset and coming home exhausted but refreshed.
